Doctors etc

Started by: jacks (437)

When we go to the Doctors we refer to him or her as such, i.e. Hello Doctor 'Jones' or whatever the surname. How come then when we go to the Dentists we don't say, Hello Dentist Brown, or whatever?? Or again, Hello Plumber Smith etc etc??

I believe, it is to do with going beyond the required study of "Doctor" and becoming a specialist in a particular medical field.
A person (Mister...) in the medical field tends to hold the title "Doctor".

In some countries, a person can use a number of titles together; therefore, can hold the title: Doctor Doctor...
In the UK, it is customary to only use one title with the necessary qualifications after the name.

But, to check this, there is Google. Although, Google does not always provide the information required.

Surgeons in the UK are traditionally called ‘Mr’ or ‘Ms’ instead of ‘Dr’ due to the fact that surgery was historically performed by ‘barber surgeons.’ These barbers didn’t have any formal qualifications, as opposed to doctors, who held a recognised medical degree conferring the title ‘Dr.’

Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize winner and director of Francis Crick Institute, was once Doctor Nurse until he moved on to become Professor Nurse.

There was also a Doctor Doctor around at one time.
